Volunteering

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Strathspey Railway. Many of the people you see working here are volunteers but we are always looking for more. The extent of your commitment will be up to you. You may choose to come on a particular day (or days) each week, or perhaps you can only manage to come on odd days when you are available, your help will be invaluable and you will be made very welcome.

It can also be the opportunity for you to learn new skills or keep your current ones up to scratch. Training is of course given and you might be surprised at the types of work we do to keep the railway running. As well as the “visible” roles such as station staff, drivers, firemen and guards, there are many “behind the scenes” tasks to do if you don’t like the limelight such as engineering, permanent way and signalmen. We are particularly looking for volunteers to help at our stations at the moment. From time to time we also need specialist assistance for specific projects so even if you think your skills are not part of running a railway, chances are they will be!

As SRA members, volunteers are able to make use of our accommodation at Spey Lodge (subject to availability).
